Delhi Awakens to Toxic Haze Post Diwali
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of this heavily contaminated metropolis were faced with inhaling extremely polluted air that registered in the "critical" level.
Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels
Various sections of Delhi registered an AQI over 500, which represents 10x the safe level set by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x above safe levels.
Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments
Since 2020, authorities had implemented a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during Diwali due to their substantial impact to the dangerous pollution that blankets the capital as colder weather sets in.
However in recent months, the recently formed city leadership approached the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the ban.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by conservation groups as being only about 30% less polluting – as a middle ground between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Legal Decision and Enforcement
Despite concerns of public health and environmental campaigners, judicial authorities approved the appeal, mandating that green firecrackers could be set off during designated periods throughout the festival.
On Monday night, there was considerable disregard of the time restrictions across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the more environmentally friendly variety.
Numerous recording stations throughout the city registered air quality reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe readings recorded during celebrations in at least the past three years.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming deteriorating atmospheric conditions in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from across the border following the events.
Chronic Environmental Issue
The dangerously high concentrations of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have remained as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Near Diwali, the concentration of toxic particulate matter in the environment has been found to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted city.
Multiple Pollution Contributors
The problem in the city is attributed to a combination of different contributors including automobile exhaust, airborne particles, construction activities, waste incineration and pollutants from agricultural fires in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.
In these regions, farmers regularly burn crop residue to clear them quickly, generating toxic smog that then gets trapped over the capital as winter air descends.
Public Health and Economic Toll
The economic and health impact on the nearly 33 million inhabitants residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to various studies.
These hazardous conditions causes elevated rates of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory conditions, and can even lead to malignancies.
Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing ten thousand premature mortalities each year in Delhi.
